When you hear people talk about the skilled trades, you may wonder what jobs exactly are included in the list of skilled trades and how many skilled trades there are. The answer to the latter is that there are many jobs that fit under the label “skilled trades” beyond the obvious like electricians and plumbers. 

Here is a list of skilled trades for anyone interested in trade jobs. Plus, click on the links of the job names to see a job training program that will help you enter that field!

Mechanical Trades

HVAC Technician

HVAC technicians are responsible for installing and repairing heating and cooling systems. 

Median pay in 2020 for HVAC technicians was $50,590 which is equal to $24.32 per hour. 

Welding

Welders are responsible for using a variety of tools to put together and repair metal pieces and products.  

Median pay in 2020 for welders was $44,190 which is equal to $21.21 per hour.  

Locksmith

Locksmiths make keys, repair, open, and change locks, and sometimes install safes. 

Median pay in 2020 for locksmiths was ​​$43,690 which is equal to $21.00 per hour. 

Automotive Specialist

Automotive specialists handle all sorts of automotive repair by troubleshooting vehicle problems and implementing a solution using the necessary tools. 

Median pay in 2020 for automotive specialists was $44,050 which is equal to $21.18 per hour. 

Building Trades

Carpenter

Carpenters work with wood and other materials to build, repair, and install structures. 

Median pay in 2020 for carpenters was $49,520 which is equal to $23.81 per hour. 

Electrician

Electricians install and repair electrical systems and related products in either residential or commercial properties. 

Median pay in 2020 for electricians was $56,900 which is equal to $27.36 per hour.  

Building Maintenance

Building maintenance workers handle varied jobs to keep a building in optimum shape including framing and drywall. 

Median pay in 2020 for building maintenance workers was $40,850 which is equal to $19.64 per hour. 

Green Building Construction

Green building construction workers are involved in building and repairing structures from the ground up using energy conservation methods. 

Median pay in 2020 for construction laborers was $37,080 which is equal to $17.83 per hour. 

Plumber

Plumbers install and repair piping and other water features for residential and commercial customers. 

Median pay in 2020 for plumbers was $56,330 which is equal to $27.08 per hour. 

Miscellaneous/Service Trades

Chef

Chefs and culinary artists are responsible for overseeing food preparation and cooking in any business or organization where food is served. 

Median pay in 2020 for chefs was $53,380 which is equal to $25.66 per hour. 

Baker

Bakers use recipes to craft a variety of baked goods including pastries and breads. 

Median pay in 2020 for bakers was $29,400 or $14.13 per hour. 

Medical Assistant

Medical assistants help health care centers run smoothly by providing administrative and clinical support. 

Median pay in 2020 for medical assistants was $35,850 which is equal to $17.23 per hour.  

Teacher Assistant

Early childhood teacher assistants work in childcare centers helping the children, teachers, and parents. 

Median pay in 2020 for teacher assistants was $28,900

Computer Support Specialist

Computer support specialists help computer users and organizations troubleshoot technical problems and find appropriate solutions. 

Median pay in 2020 for computer support specialists was $55,510 which is equal to $26.69 per hour.
